Author(s) Juan de Guzmán
Addressee(s) Juan Pérez de Ribadeneira
In English

Letter from, Juan de Guzmán, velvet weaver, to Juan Pérez de Ribadeneira, administrator.

The author writes to Juan Pérez de Ribadeneira to apologise of not being able to repay his debt, and to inform the addressee that he is negotiating the sale of his loom in order to settle the debt.

The accused in this process was Juan de Guzmán, velvet weaver. In 1651 he was accused by the Inquisition Tribunal, under request of García de Toledo, because he had burst in the house of the latter, challenging him to a duel. The reason of their confrontation was that Juan de Guzmán had already been arrested under request of García de Toledo baceuse of an unpaid debt. Juan Pérez de Ribadeneira, mayordomo del propio García de Toledo, had acted as a guarantor for this debt. Juan de Guzmán, however, had alleged that the debt had been cancelled, but that García de Toledo was angry with him because he had not accepted to go to Malta to serve a brother of García de Toledo, Martín. The proceedings are incomplete, so we cannot know if the accused was eventually condemned and which was the sentence.
