[1820-1830]. Carta de Francisco Romo para un destinatario no identificado.

Author(s) Francisco Romo

In English

Letter from Francisco Romo to an unidentified addressee.

The author writes an unidentified addressee to give him various news, the most noteworthy of which is the return of Pedro IV to Portugal after his abdicating as the emperor of Brazil.

The General Police Administration was closely monitoring the activities of foreign citizens residing in Portugal, also controlling their communications, in collaboration with the superintendent of the Posts. This letter is part of this intercepted correspondence from those Spanish military and intellectuals who, fleeing the absolutist Spain, had taken refuge in Portugal and were suspected of harbouring liberal ideas and of plotting to overthrow Fernando VII and establish a constitutional regime.

In this letter we can find a narration of the return of Pedro IV to Portugal and of the hopes the author put in this return. Pedro IV of Portugal had abdicated the throne of Portugal in favour of his daughter Maria II de Braganza before going to Brazil, where he reigned as the emperor Pedro I. In 1831, he abdicated the throne of Brazil to return to Portugal to help his daughter reconquer the throne of Portugal, which had been seized by Miguel, brother of Pedro. The struggle between the two brothers ended with the victory of Pedro and with the restitution of the throne of Portugal to Maria II. All these events are strictly related with the struggle for and against liberalism in Portugal and Spain.
