Destinatário(s) | Inquisição de Lisboa |
In English | Accusation letter from Amador do Couto to the Lisbon Inquisition. The author tells the inquisitor about the words pronounced by another inmate during an "auto de fe". The defendant in this process is Mateus Duarte, a potter, old Christian, born and resident in the Azores, accused and convicted of blasphemy. It was Amador do Couto, a previous inmate in the same jail as Mateus Duarte, who denounced his blasphemous words. Among these, he had allegedly said that the power of the Devil was greater than the power of Our Lord. In May 1682, the defendant was arrested, being later sentenced to row in the galleys for five years and to be publicly whipped, among other punishments. |
