In English | Letter from Manuel Enríquez to Mariana de la Paz. The author asks José de Aro to write to Mariana de la Paz, Alfonso Álvarez´s wife, to ask her for help because he has been accused falsely. In between 1654 and 1657, Alfonso Álvarez, Diego Álvarez, Diego Enríquez and Manuel Enríquez (the author of the letter) were accused of judaizers, heresy and apostasy. However, they never served the sentence because they fled. The letter was provided to the process documentation by José de Aro, a witness who was also accused and then forgiven. He was a resident of Madrid, a beneficiary of the Royal Council and a bailiff at his Majesty´s Royal House and Court. In the letter José de Aro states that in a trip to France he saw Diego Álvarez and Manuel Enríquez in Bayonne. On his way back, José de Aro received several letters from Diego Álvarez. Two of the letters were opened and de Aro was asked to send them to two different addressees (Manuel de San Juan and Tomás de Velasco). Furthermore, the letter found in the process documentation was also handed to José de Aro by Diego Álvarez. The sender of this letter, sent from Bayonne, was Manuel Enríquez and the addressee was Mariana de la Paz, Alfonso Álverez´s wife. |
