Letter from Luís Pereira Pinto, a priest, to António Rebelo Santiago, an ecclesiastical doctor.

The author asks the addressee whether or not he should denounce Manuel Pereira da Graça, a medicine doctor and a knight of the Order of Christ. The latter was heard in prison insulting Christ and the Devil for lacking the power of freeing him.

Manuel Pereira da Graça was a physician who had studied Medicine in the University of Coimbra after having traveled in France. He was prosecuted for heresy. Although he recognized that he spoke frequently against the Church, he explained his reasoning to the Inquisition: he thought that there were too many priests, that they often abused young girls in confession and that miracles were hard to prove. But he only wanted to try the soundness of the priests’ arguments, that was all. He received a light sentence.

Eu ouvi dizer cura, Joze de Souza Pa-checo q lhe dissera hum leigo dos Frades de Se-rem q o Doutor Manuel Pera da Graça Me-dico natural da frega de Macinhata de vouga e Cavalheiro do habito de christo estando prezo na cadea do seu destrito estava dizendo com a venera do mmo habito na mão o couza semilhante, estas palavras: es hũ Ladrãozinho, ou judeozinho q me não livras daqui, ou palavras semilhantes, e mais falandome neste facto, João Roiz Pera da Barroca desta frega da Branca pareceme q elle disse q o tal Medico estava dizendo q levasse o Diabo o habito ou de q lhe servia, se o não livra-va da prizão, o tal João Roiz Pera ouvio contar tãobem isto, e Eu fui consultado se con efeito se devia dar conta disto, pareceome q não mas como agora duvido rogolhe me avize se he cazo de denunciar, e sendo-o por esta mma carta
