Destinatário(s) | Miguel Rodrigues Colaço |
In English | Private letter from José Gonçalves Marques to Miguel Rodrigues Colaço. The author clearly shows he is angry at the recipient and refutes a number of accusations that had been made towards him. He also shows his good service regarding the owner of the vessel. José António Brandão was a merchant in Pernambuco, Brazil, and the the owner of the galley Senhor Bom Jesus dos Navegantes e São João Nepomuceno, which made the trade route between Brazil and Angola. In 1760 he judicially demanded that Miguel Rodrigues Colaço repayed the amount that he owed him. The relevant facts had occurred the year before, when Miguel Rodrigues Colaço, who was the advisor of José António Brandão about the best procedures regarding his vessel and the best trade moves according to the circumstances, sold the vessel when it was full of goods to be separately negotiated. Miguel Rodrigues Colaço kept the money to himself and, with it, started his own business. The two letters included in the process were written by José Gonçalves Marques, the captain of the vessel, whom Miguel Rodrigues Colaço had to trick in several ways in order to pursue his intents. |
