In English | Letter from Pedro de Avendaño to Diego Gavilán. The author asks Diego Gavilán to help him selling his belongings before setting sail for Spain; his journey was designed to claim justice. In 1564 Sebastián de Ribas brought a law suit against Diego de Zúñiga y Velasco, count of Nieva and viceroy of Peru; the attorney Briviesca de Muñatones; and Ortega de Melgosa, a judge of the Casa de Contrataciones. Ribas argued his health resented due to the torments he underwent and the lack of legal assurance. The medical expenses and the journey he began to claim justice exceeded ten thousand pesos. The enquiries focused on the underlying reasons for Sebastián de Ribas´ arrest. A letter from the city of Cuzco was provided, in which members of the clergy expressed their suspicions about the uprising intentions from the soldiers. Having the aforementioned information into account, the viceroy ordered the arrest of several individuals, among which was Sebastián de Ribas. When the latter was seized, some letters written by Pedro de Avendaño were found and added to the trial documentation. The plaintiff provided a letter written by Monzón. However, and despite his efforts, the Court found that he had not proved his cause sufficiently and ruled against him. Appeals were filed afterwards, although the outcome remains unknown. |
