Manuel Pereira Farroupo, a sawyer, José Antunes, a muleteer who had deserted from the Infantry and José Roxo, a soldier, were arrested and accused of being highwaymen and thieves. Among the items that were apprehended to them (a rifle, ammunitions, a whistler, clothes) was this letter. Manuel Pereira Farroupo was acquitted.
