In English

Letter from Francisco Bayón, a lawyer, to his lawyer, Valentín Calvo Antón.

The author writes to his lawyer, Valentín Calvo Antón, complaining because the mayor has hindered him from trying to settle his affairs before leaving the village and heading to his exile.

In 1824, Francisco Bayón, new graduate in Law and lawyer at the Royal Chancellery of Valladolid, tried to marry Agapita Hernández, a widow resident in La Seca (Valladolid). Although his father had not given his consent to the marriage, Francisco left his home and married Agapita Hernández, even after had made public a warning against him. Basilio García Bayón claimed that the marriage was invalid because of the existence of a near degree of kinship between the bride and the groom, and questioned the reputation of Agapita Hernández. As a consequence of this claim, Francisco Bayón accused his father of slander, and tried also to threaten him with a gun. The public scandal caused the intervention of the Royal Chancellery. The public prosecutor reprimanded Basilio García, stating that he should have dealt with the matter of the marriage of his son in a private way, without making it public. On the other hand, he sentenced Francisco Bayón to six years of banishment from the town, giving to his father the responsibility of choosing where he should go to live. Once the judgment was delivered and while he was imprisoned in the prison of La Seca, Francisco Bayón sent a letter to his attorney, Valentín Calvo Antón, in which he complained because the mayor has hindered him from trying to settle some issue concerning his wife before leaving La Seca. However, he was not granted permission to do so. He spent his banishment in the village of Villardefrades, where he worked as a lawyer. When the period of banishment ended, Basilio García informed the chancellery of his son's desire to reconcile with his father and to go back to La Seca.
