In English | Letter from Antonio Temporal to Hernando de Porres. The author assures that Jerónimo de Robles did not provide anything for his own maintenance during his stay in the convent and that it was him who took care of the expenses. In 1625 the Council of Castille examined the litigation between the convent of Santa Clara la Real of Madrid and Juan de Robles, a hatter. The dispute had to do with Juan de Robles´ son maintenance during the three years he spent in the convent (1615-1618). The convent claimed the payment of 100 ducats per year for the boy´s education. Whilst Juan de Robles argued it was him who had to be compensated. Firstly, he alleged his son was taken to the convent against his will and persuaded by Fray Antonio Temporal. Besides, his son had provided services to the congregation, therefore, it was the convent´s obligation to compensate the parents for the different objects that María de Barreda, the boy´s mother, had sent him. The convent denied those arguments and tried to make their point by presenting several letters written by the convent´s abbot as well as other members of the congregation. The letters confirmed the expenses made for Jerónimo Robles´ education. The judgment found in favour of the convent and condemned Juan de Robles to pay 60 ducats, from which it had to be taken away the value of the objects provided by Jerónimo Robles. However, after appealing, the defendant was pardoned. |
