1628. Carta não autógrafa de Isabel da Cunha para o seu filho, Duarte da Cunha, escrevente, preso.

Autor(es) Isabel da Cunha
Destinatário(s) Duarte da Cunha
In English

Dictated letter from Isabel da Cunha, a widow, to her son Duarte da Cunha, a clerk.

The author tells her son, who is in prison, how he should behave in order to benefit his case. She also gives him details on all her efforts to have him set free by the Inqusition. She doesn't help him more because she is very poor.

Duarte da Cunha was arrested in 1627, accused of disturbing the Inquisition's correct ways. He used to have on him three fake letters that attested that he was the son of an Inquisition collaborator ('familiar') and was suspected of menacing people and extort them with the power symbolized by those letters. He tried to escape prison by several ways: he begged, he faked an illness, he menaced to kill himself and he received tools to saw the prison's bars. In the end, he was convicted.
