1768. Carta de Francisco Baldajos, soldado, para su esposa Isabel Rodríguez, hilandera.

Autor(es) Francisco Baldajos
Destinatário(s) Isabel Rodríguez
In English

Letter from Francisco Baldajos, a soldier, to his wife Isabel Rodríguez, a spinner.

Francisco Baldajos writes to his wife from prison for warning her of the dangers that talking to the wrong people could bring about and he laments her situation.

In 1768 the Royal Chancery of Valladolid tried Andrea del Castillo Lobo, her husband Juan Rodríguez and her lover Santos Gutiérrez "el Romerillo"; for several offences related with their trade as hawkers. According to some witnesses, the origin of their merchandise was questionable and, besides, their low prices were due to customs default. It was not the first time that Andrea del Castillo Lobo faced justice. To the trial issued by the Chancery were added the proceedings from Ampudia (Palencia) in 1741 for a theft and another one from Capillas (Palencia) in 1765 for a de facto relationship. When the defendant´s houses were searched, several letters linking them with other individuals who had participated in the crimes were found. As it was the case of Francisco Baldajos, married to Isabel Rodríguez, Juan Rodríguez and Andrea del Castillo´s daughter, who after deserting the army used to travel with his parents-in-law. The Chancery condemned Santos Gutiérrez to eight years´ banishment in an African jail, as well as to pay the expenses of the trial. Andrea del Castillo also had to pay the expenses of the trial and remained in prison despite her release petition due to her bad health.
