Maarten Janssen, 2014-
Autor(es) | Filipa de Jesus de Portugal |
---|---|
Destinatário(s) | Marta de Alpoim |
In English | Private letter from dona Filipa de Jesus de Portugal, a nun, to dona Marta de Alpoim, a noble woman. The author tells the addressee how she misses her, how she suffers in the Castilian exile and how she needs fresh news from Portugal. She complains on the way she is treated as a captive: she goes to the choir, serves as the other nuns, has only one person to attend to her, is not allowed to go out and see the sun and the moon and can only speak to her confessor and her physician. Dona Filipa de Portugal was the daughter of Dom António prior do Crato, claimant of the Portuguese thrown during the succession crisis after the death of Dom Sebastião in 1578. When Felipe II of Spain was crowned king of Portugal, he allegedly persecuted the daughters of Dom António, arresting them in Castilian convents. |
