In English

Letter from Eugenio Sánchez, a cloth-shearer, to his wife Catalina Martín Fernández.

The author asks his second wife, Catalina Martín Fernández, to forgive him for having withheld from her he was already married.

Having been accused of bigamy, a process against Eugenio Sánchez ensued between 1748 and 1750. The defendant was found guilty. Eugenio Sánchez, a native to Sonseca (Toledo) and a resident of Casatejada (Cáceres), was a cloth-shearer and a disabled soldier. He got married first in Sonseca to María Dorado (Tomasa Sánchez and Juan Dorado’s daughter) on April the 8th 1748; and then a second time in Badajoz to Catalina Martín Fernández (Lucía Vázquez’s daughter), on February the 17th 1748. The defendant was denounced to the Holy Ofice by Catalina Martín Fernández, who provided this letter. The "fellow countryman” (el "paisano”) mentioned in the letter is Gerónimo Pascual Hidalgo.
