1734. Carta não autógrafa de Romana da Rosa, vendedeira de pão, para o seu irmão, João de Deus, oficial de sapateiro e tendeiro.

Autor(es) Romana da Rosa
Destinatário(s) João de Deus
In English

Family letter dictated by Romana da Rosa, a bread seller, to be sent to her brother João de Deus, a shoemaker and a shopkeeper.

The author tells her brother that she hears all sorts of rumours about him, including the rumour of bigamy. She also sends some news about his family and friends.

João de Deus was married for 13 years to Maria de São Bento, in the South of Portugal. He then moved to the North and remarried while his first wife was still alive. He changed his name and his occupation and asked for a new birth certificate, as if he were a bastard ('son of the Church'). He was denounced by some neighbours of his first wife and by a priest who heard them. He was convicted to work 5 years in the galleys.

If there is no translation for the letter itself, you may copy the text (while using the view 'Standardization') and paste it to an automatic translator of your choice.
