1827. Carta de Francisco Romo para Manuel López, capitán de caballería.

Author(s) Francisco Romo
Addressee(s) Manuel López
In English

Letter from Francisco Romo to Manuel López, a cavalry captain.

The author writes Manuel López to give him relevant information about the moments previous to the beginning of the First Carlist War. He also informs the addressee about the number of the soldiers enlisted in the Carlist side at that moment.

The General Police Administration was closely monitoring the activities of foreign citizens residing in Portugal, also controlling their communications, in collaboration with the superintendent of the Posts. This letter is part of this intercepted correspondence from those Spanish military and intellectuals who, fleeing the absolutist Spain, had taken refuge in Portugal and were suspected of harbouring liberal ideas and of plotting to overthrow Fernando VII and establish a constitutional regime.

This letter contains relevant information about the conflicts previous to the Carlist Wars and about the movements in favour or against the two sides of the conflict. It also describes the lack of enthusiasm for the Royalist side felt by the people. Moreover, the author foresees the possibility of the beginning of a civil war.

This letter was sent together with the letter PSCR2781.
