Love letter from María Antonia Gimbernat to Leonardo Galli.

The author tells the recipient about the pressures from her father, and the possibility of her being disinherited as a result of both their relationship and her firm intention to marry him.

María Antonia Gimbernat, daughter of Don Antonio Gimbernat, honorary surgeon, had promised Leonardo Galli, surgeon of the Royal Spanish Guards, that she would marry him. Her father, however, opposed the realization of that union. She finally gave in to family pressure and returned to the family home. At that time, Leonardo Galli demanded the fulfillment of her word, and to prove the link between them presented eleven letters written between April 3 and June 6, 1782. In these letters the intentions between the couple are quite clear, as well as her determination to marry him. During the process, María Antonia tried to deny the letters and, since she could not prove she did not write them, she stated that she had been entrapped to do so.

Hijo amado de todo mi corazon he recivido tu tan amorosa y estimada carta con mucho gusto alegrandome estes vueno yo igualmente lo estoy gs a Dios al pesar de tanto contratiempo mucho me ha gustado esta tu ultima carta por lo qe me dices aunque tus gentes tamvien nos sean contrarios n degeras de quererme y de casarte conmigo mi Leonardo aciendolo asi y no escuchando a nadia cumples como ombre de vien y de otro modo pero ya estoy cierte que lo aras asi mi querido vien puedes estar cierto de tu Maria Antonia que te ara quedar vien porque es mucho lo que te quiero y por mas que agan los tuyos y los mios nunca degere de ser tuya y tu mio y asi dejarlos aser que Dios nos ayudera a mi me dicen muchas cosas y que tu aqui en Barcelona te anemoreras de de otra y que hare yo luego les respondo que no me da cuydado eso porque ya se que no lo aras y que tu tamvien saves que yo no lo are uyendo eso callan el otr otro dia me dijo el amo que podia ser que padra ellasa m motivo para impedir el matrimonio yo le respondi q impedirlo no pero que deseredarme y qe eso no se me dave nada y el se puso a reir y me dijo mucho save ud y esta ud vien instruida y le respondi si señor se que padra no pueda lagrar aser otra y callo a ti no te de cuydado por mas cosas que te digan qe luego les savra mal de averlo dicho si vas en tra tarragona no atiendas a nadia ni enseñas ninguna carta mia y por mas cosas que te digan de mi que ya no te quiera no creas nara nada responde que tu estas cierto de mi y no ay nececidad que vean mis cartas porque luego nos privarian el escrivirnos ya he leido la carta de Don Jose m e alegrado mucho por aca no hay novedad tu prucura a divertirte y no agas caso de nada que hare lo mismo aDios y aDios
