In English | Information letter sent by António Joaquim de Sousa Caliço, a notary, to Diogo Jacinto de Almeida, a clerk. The author confirms to the addressee that a certain defendant ceased to be prosecuted by the Justice because he was paralyzed for good. In 1807 António Martins, «The Little One», was arrested in Loulé (Algarve) and sent to a Lisbon jail under the accusation of murder. Nevertheless, he managed to prove that he had an illness and obtained a license to go home and cure himself. Eight years later, when a new court clerk examined the proceedings, he looked for the defendant in the Lisbon jail and found him missing. He then wrote to the Algarve, to the former notary who accompanied the case, and received the letter here published: the defendant, who was now 80 years old, was completely paralyzed. |
