In English | Family letter from Jácome Valentim to his wife, Maria de Burgos. The author reports the news from his prison and sends his love to his wife, family and friends. He hopes that he will soon be set free. Jácome Valentim was arrested in 1542 under the accusation of Judaism. This letter was kept within his Inquisition proceedings and the defendant had to answer for it in his interrogation. He confirmed that the signature was his but testified that the handwriting was that of Diogo de Miranda. The latter was arrested twice by the Inquisition: once in 1543 and a second time in 1558, when he was already 72 years old. |
