He used to enter the house of José Joaquim da Silva by the roof with the aid of a girl he was accused of seducing, Maria José dos Anjos da Guarda e Silva, the daughter of the plaintiff. He was apparently planning to elope with her. His father was against the match and accused José Nicolau of robbing his house and of attempting against his life and that of his son. Maria José wrote to him in jail signing with his family name, "Cresuel", and calling herself his wife. |
